Scenarios


It’s time to start preparing now to ensure that your team is ready for the challenge.  This year’s scenarios will test your skills in navigating through unfamiliar territories, solving complex puzzles, and overcoming unexpected obstacles. Whether you’re an experienced explorer post or a newcomer to the field, there’s no better time than now to start honing your skills and building your teams strategy. So gather your gear, rally your teammates, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure.

2024 Competition Scenarios

TRAFFIC STOP

Explorers will make an enforcement stop.  The Explorers will contact the occupant(s) of the vehicle and take the appropriate action as dictated by the violator. 

20-minute time limit. (Two, Two-Person teams per Post)


DUI EVALUATION

Explorers will contact an individual(s) and investigate / evaluate possible violations and take the appropriate action based on their observations.  Team will not be allowed to use P.A.S. device, checklist or cheater cards.

20-minute time limit. (Two, Two-Person teams per Post)


HIGH RISK STOP

Explorers will consist of a primary and secondary unit. Teams will not be allowed to use checklists or cheater cards. Department specific arrest techniques may be used.

20-minute time limit. (One four-person team per Post)


BUILDING SEARCH

Explorers will enter a structure of unknown size and configuration and attempt to locate and take appropriate action based on their findings.

OFFICER NEEDS ASSISTANCE

Explorers will respond to an officer needs assistance call. Team members will assess the situation and respond accordingly.

UKNOWN TROUBLE / DISTURBANCE

Explorers will contact an individual(s) and are to assess a use of force scenario.  They will have to use command presence and appropriate force options (provided) to resolve the situation.

ACTIVE SHOOTER

Explorers will respond to a call of a critical incident. Team members will assess the situation and respond accordingly.

HOSTAGE RESCUE / NEGOTIATIONS

Explorers will respond to a hostage situation. After communication with the suspect are deemed unsuccessful explorers will conduct a hostage rescue.

TEAM OBSTACLE COURSE

Explorers will be timed while completing an obstacle course. A six-foot wall, push-ups and sit-ups will be incorporated into this year’s course. (Teams/Explorers are to wear appropriate uniform pants/BDUs, boots and T-shirt).

CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (CSI)

Explorers will respond to a crime scene. Explorers will be graded on proper PPE, log in / out procedures, photos and sketches of scene, measurements, collection and proper documentation of evidence.

UNDERCOVER OPERATIONS:

Explorers will utilize surveillance and undercover techniques to conduct an undercover buy and possible arrest.  Teams will be provided an Ops plan with additional information during competition check-in.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Explorers will contact parties involved in a suspected domestic violence incident.  Explorers will need to determine the party at fault, identify applicable crimes, effect an arrest if necessary and provide paperwork / services to involved victim(s).

INTERVIEW AND INTERROGATION

Explorers will interview and interrogate multiple subjects involved in a crime.  Explorers will attempt to identify the primary subject and obtain a confession.  Teams will be provided a written summary of the incident upon check in.

WRITTEN / PELLET B EXAM

Explorers will take a sample version of a PELLET B test. Explorers will be tested on Spelling, Vocabulary, Reading and a Cloze portion. (Traditionally, 60% of CHP applicants fail the POST PELLETB Test). Team average will count towards overall competition score.

MYSTERY SCENARIO

This scenario is intended to challenge the Explorer team in every capacity.  Critical thinking and problem solving that transitions into a decision to induce action is the goal.  Have fun with it but remember it will be filled with challenges!

Note: Explorers will not know what scenario they are heading to until being briefed by the proctor. This will encourage all Explorers to be prepared for every scenario.
